Project: Planting design & installation with tree planting (private client)

Location: Edinburgh

This Edinburgh client got in touch with Tom to undertake a grand scale ‘garden rescue’. The sprawling garden, set in a large site under Arthur’s Seat, required almost complete re-planting. Conditions in the many flowerbeds varied from dry and shady, to very bright beds in full sun. The loss of a mature Horse Chestnut had also left a large gap at the front of the property which we addressed by supplying and planting two substantial new trees.

The job was carried out in phases. Initially, a detailed microclimate analysis and soil tests were undertaken to assess the garden conditions, along with a period of consultation with the client to ensure the overall project was phased according to the greatest priorities. Highly detailed planting plans were then drawn up, along with moodboards to show what the selected plants looked like. Over the first winter, three large trees were planted. These required large machinery to move, and best practice soil management and tree staking was followed to the letter to ensure rapid establishment of the large trees. The second phase was the shrub planting, and then a huge amount of herbaceous perennials and smaller plants were brought in to finalise the scheme. Tom remains engaged on this site in a monthly consultancy role to assist the client’s gardeners as the scheme establishes and develops.
