Project: Garden design (private client)
Location: Glasgow West
This courtyard garden in the west end of Glasgow was created to provide a tranquil, woodland sanctuary in the midst of the city. One of the main requirements was to provide a garden that was wildlife-friendly. This was done by retaining as much biodiversity as possible including dead wood habitat, as well as using plants that would ensure more wildlife was attracted to the garden.
The existing sandstone walls of the property and garden were complemented by a fresh sandstone patio and reconstructed dry stone wall. Sweeping lines of steel edging created polygon-shaped flowerbeds, and the dense planting will ultimately create an extremely lush, plant-focused and verdant urban sanctuary.
Some of the existing planting was retained, including two large trees and a large Ivy plant, and new plants introduced as part of the design included native Guelder Rose and other native plants such as the Soft Shield fern (Polystichum setiferum).
